TAMS Press Release naming Executive Director

The Texas Association of Mid-Size Schools (TAMS) has announced the selection of Dr. Greg Gibson as the new Executive Director, effective in January of 2020. Dr. Gibson is currently the Superintendent of Schools at the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District (SCUC ISD).

TAMS was founded in 1990 to impact the state’s school finance system in order to obtain equitable funding of education resources while addressing disparities in size and diseconomies of scale. School districts that meet the criteria of Mid-Size Schools offer a PK-12 program, ranging from 1,600 to 5,000 students in regular daily attendance.

Dr. Gibson grew up attending small and mid-size school districts while his father was a head football coach in small Texas towns, and later worked for small and mid-size districts as teacher, bus driver, coach, principal and eventually to his first job as Superintendent at Graham ISD. Subsequent stops at larger school districts, including SCUC ISD, have also prepared him for his new role, as he has continually worked with state legislators to support public education for all Texas public schools.

“I am ecstatic about being selected as the new Executive Director for TAMS,” said Dr. Gibson. “I am humbled to be able to continue the great work of Sandy Schwartz and serve a quarter of the public school districts in Texas with this new role. TAMS has a strong reputation in striving for excellence in communities all over this great state.”

Dr. Jodi Duron, who has served as the organization’s president since 2016 and is currently Superintendent of Schools of Elgin ISD, praised the selection of Dr. Gibson.  “TAMS has selected the right person to lead the organization into the future,” said Dr. Duron. “Dr. Gibson is a career educator, a tireless advocate for public education, and has extensive experience working with state lawmakers from both sides of the political spectrum.”

She also praised the search committee’s thoroughness over the past several months that led to the selection of Dr. Gibson.

“I cannot say enough about the great work of our search firm, Arrow Educational Services, Inc., under the leadership of Dr. Russell Marshall and Mr. Jim Dunlap.  They brought forward an outstanding group of candidates for consideration and made the work of our interview committee smooth and seamless.”

“I think the search committee hit a home run in the selection of Dr. Gibson,” said Dr. Marshall.

In 2016, Dr. Gibson was selected as the ESC-20 Superintendent of the Year and was one of five finalists for the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Superintendent of the Year Award. He has also been serving as Trustee for the Teacher Retirement System of Texas since 2016 after receiving an appointment from Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Dr. Gibson and his wife, Oteka (also a public school educator), have three grown children, all fine products of Texas public schools.

The best predictor of future performance is past behavior.
